Volker Musahl, M.D. is currently an Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine as well as the Department of Bioengineering in the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Musahl trained at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, graduating in 1998. He then worked at the Martin-Luther-Hospital in Berlin under the leadership of Prof. Peter Hertel. In 2000, he accepted a position as post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh with Prof. Feddie Fu and Savio Woo. He finished his specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 2008. In 2009, he spent 1 year in a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship with Profs. Altchek and Rodeo at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
Dr. Musahl was selected as a member of the ACL Study Group in 2011 and his research focuses on the anatomy and biomechanics of the ACL, clinical examination of the knee and rotatory knee laxity, surgical techniques of ACL reconstruction, and meniscus transplantation. Dr. Musahl has been a member of ESSKA since 2000 and has been active in the ESSKE program committee. He is also a member of ISAKOS, AAOS, ORS, AOSSM, AANA and AGA.
