Analysis and Control of the Synchronous Buck Converter with a Constant Power Load
The ideal constant power load introduces a destabilizing effect on dc/dc power electronic converters. In particular the synchronous buck converter shown below is open loop unstable with a pure constant power load. Loads with constant power characteristics are found in real systems when a regulated converter is used as a load, which is the case in many current information and communications technology (ICT) power systems and will be the case in DC distribution systems that are considered. This research uses large-signal simulation and analysis to examine the control and stability problems found in the ideal constant power load case of the ideal synchronous buck converter to provide insight into the control challenges found in designing real DC power systems.
