To apply to Graduate School at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering:
LETTERS OF REFERENCE: Applicants must have at least two reference letters submitted electronically as part of the on-line admissions application process.
INTERVIEWS: It is recommended that PhD applicants have an interview with a faculty member; however, this is not a requirement for admission.
TRANSCRIPTS: Applicants are required to upload academic records from each academic institution(undergraduate and/or graduate) attended. Official, original academic credentials that are issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. These will be considered unofficial copies.
GRE SCORES: GRE scores are encouraged but optional. Official GRE test scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Using the institution code of 2927 for the University of Pittsburgh is sufficient. Please refer to the following web site for further information on the GRE and registration forms: http://www.ets.org/gre.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (Required for international applicants): All international applicants whose first language is not English must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based test)/213 (computer-based test)/80 (internet-based test), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam with a minimum Band of 6.5 (taking the academic writing and reading modules of the test), or the Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 105. You can upload copies of your score reports (if available) when submitting your online application. This uploaded version is not considered "official" and will be used for preliminary review until your official scores are received from ETS/IELTS/Duolingo.

Expectations of Applicants:
Possess an undergraduate or graduate degree from an ABET-accredited program in any engineering discipline, or a degree in a complementary technical discipline,such as mathematics, physics, or computer science.
Undergraduate knowledge of probability and statistics, calculus, linear algebra, and proficiency in computer programming is required.
Students who cannot demonstrate these skills but are otherwise qualified will be required to complete the appropriate undergraduate courses; these undergraduate courses do not count towards a graduate degree.
APPLICATION DEADLINES:
PhD Applicants:
If you wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship your application must be complete by January 31 for the Fall term or September 30 for the Spring term. If you are funding yourself or have some other source of financial support these deadlines can be relaxed.
MS Applicants:
We accept applications on an ongoing basis. However, you must allow at least 2 to 4 weeks for an admission decision to be rendered and for completing the related paperwork. In addition, if you are an international applicant, you must allow another month for the Office of International Services (OIS) to process the paperwork for your visa application, and as much additional time as might be required in your country of origin to obtain a visa from the US Consulate.
For the fall term, we suggest that the application package be complete no later than July 15 for US applicants and no later than April 15 for international applicants. This will allow enough time for your application to be processed and for you to arrive in time for the start of the term.
Please do NOT send hard copies of materials that have been submitted electronically. Original documents are NOT required until you are admitted and decide to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
