Newly enrolled MS-MPE students are required to undergo criminal background checks (State Police, FBI) through ProVerify, Health & Immunizations, and successfully complete a HIPAA online course demonstrated through a downloaded certificate. These are the same requirements for students and residents in the Schools of the Health Sciences (SOHS).
Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA to remain in good standing in the program.
The project-oriented Required courses (BIOEN 2152, BIOENG 2170, and BIOEN 2171) implement concepts from the Required courses (BIOENG 2150 and BIOENG 2151) through clinical immersion and subsequent prototype development. Enrollment in these hands-on courses is restricted and requires instructor approval.
All elective courses must be approved by the curricular advisor to ensure the student obtains a coherent and meaningful education through the MS-MPE program
The Professional MS in Bioengineering - Medical Product Engineering is not intended for students pursuing the PhD and admission to the program does not guarantee continuation on to the PhD program. Students interested in pursuing the PhD must complete the PhD application process.
BIOENG 2152 Medical Product Prototyping Foundations Lab can be exempted if tested out. If successfully test out, another approved 3 credits elective course must be taken instead to complete the 30 credits requirement.
If you have any other questions, or need clarification or would like to discuss, please email the MS-MPE Program at MSMPE@pitt.edu with your specific request. These could be in several areas such as whether you are an existing Pitt Bioengineering student, or from a non-technical track and are interested.
All classes, unless specified by the Course Instructor, expect in-person attendance at Pitt’s Oakland campus in Pittsburgh. There is no remote synchronous or asynchronous delivery of course materials.
