Bioengineering is all about designing tools to study and support thriving human bodies. It is a broad, interdisciplinary field that uses principles from biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, ethics, and more. Pitt bioengineering programs are split into different tracks of study. Learn more about what our students and faculty study below!

Bioimaging involves using and improving cutting edge tools like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for disease diagnosis. Signals is a multidisciplinary field that uses all kinds of biosignals to formulate data-driven approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Some of our professors are using neural images to diagnose psychiatric disorders like anxiety and more!

Biomechanics is the science of body movement including how muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments work together to move. Some of our professors study how this works to develop better shoes for people working in restaurants!

Medical product engineering is a field that focuses on translating scientific discoveries and engineering inventions into products people can use. and improving wheelchair designs so people who use wheelchairs can access more places, including waterparks!

MCSE is a field studies the smallest units in biology – cells and molecules – to better understand how diseases progress and how to engineer biology to fight them. Some of our professors are developing innovative tools using genetic material to restore vision in people with retinal disease!

Neural engineering is a broad field that designs better tools to understand how the brain works and develop brain-controlled artificial limbs, eyes, and more. Some of our professors are designing prosthetics that can help paralyzed people eat a bar of chocolate

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine focuses on using cells, materials, and biochemicals to repair or replace organs. Some of our professors are developing artificial cardiovascular organs that are used in patients right now!
