This work follows up of previous work by Sai Vishnubohtla trying to understand why adhesion seems to dramatically increase with applied load. Continuing our collaboration with Ashlie Martini’s group at UC Merced, we found that when considering the type of separation, traditional fracture mechanics models may not apply. The misapplication of these models results an increase in the apparent work of adhesion whereas we show that the true of adhesion is unchanged when considering the type of separation. This work is important for adhesion nanoscale contacts such as a nanoparticle’s adhesion to its support.
