The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) invites applications at all academic levels for a tenure-track professor position in the areas of Quantum Computing and Quantum Information (QCQI), with interests in computational, algorithmic and theoretical aspects of QCQI. Successful applicants should have the ability to build an externally funded research program, as well as contribute to teaching in the MEMS Department. Applicants should have a PhD or ScD in Engineering or other related fields, including Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics. As a MEMS appointment, preference will be given to candidates with research interests in area of mechanical engineering and/or materials engineering.

While the position is in engineering, the applicant will interact with a relatively large number of quantum researchers in several departments/schools within the campus. Pittsburgh is now a regional hub for quantum research, with the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute (http://www.pqi.org) having over 100 members. This is one of a number of positions in quantum that is being advertised by Pitt this year. To that end, Pitt is strategically investing in Quantum Technologies across its campus, building on existing strengths in physics, engineering, chemistry and computer science. Therefore, we are seeking applicants who have strong interdisciplinary interests in engineering, and who can and are willing to collaborate with colleagues in other departments.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) invites applications at all academic levels for a tenure-track professor position in the area of Thermal Sciences, with a preference for a focus on nuclear engineering. Successful applicants should have the ability to build an externally funded research program, as well as contribute to the teaching of thermal science courses in the MEMS Department. Applicants should have a PhD or ScD in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.

We are seeking applicants who have strong interdisciplinary interests and who can collaborate across engineering disciplines. The primary hiring focus will be on candidates with demonstrated experimental and/or computational research experience and a sound fundamental understanding of thermal sciences. Examples include, but not limited to, nuclear thermal hydraulics and other heat transfer applications in nuclear reactors.

The MEMS Department currently has 30 tenured or tenure-track faculty members who generate over $8 million in annual research expenditures. The Department maintains cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities in its six core research competencies: materials for extreme environments; advanced manufacturing and design; soft matter biomechanics; computational and data-enabled engineering; nuclear and other sustainable energies; and quantitative and in situ materials characterization. The MEMS Department offers nuclear engineering programs for both undergraduate and qualified graduate students. Students can earn a Professional or Research Master of Science or Graduate Certificate through flexible on-campus and online options under the guidance of faculty experts that possess senior leadership from the nuclear power industry.

The successful candidate for this position will benefit from the resources, support, and multidisciplinary research environment fostered by interdisciplinary centers, including the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Research Computing and the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering located within the Swanson School of Engineering. The latter is a user facility, which houses state-of-the-art materials characterization and fabrication capabilities.
