UPDATE 7/17/20: Fall 2020 and 2021 applicants in any department or program should consider the GRE an optional submission. If an applicant has already taken the GRE and believes their scores will be beneficial to their application, they may submit them-- but it is optional. 

Each department in the Swanson School of Engineering determines an applicant's need to submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. The below chart should help you based on your online program of interest. GRE scores are useful in combination with other materials submitted for admission.

*Candidates applying with an undergraduate degree from an institution outside of the US are required to complete the GRE. This GRE requirement is typically waived only for those students who are applying to be part-time or Professional Master's students. Candidates should consult the department to which they are applying to confirm whether or not a GRE score is required for admission.

GRE scores are useful in combination with other materials submitted for admission. Departments typically do not establish minimum scores below which applicants are automatically denied admission. Scores submitted must not be more than five years old. An official copy of the test scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to the Office of Administration. Personal copies are not acceptable, nor are “attested” or notarized copies. The institutional code for the University of Pittsburgh is 2927.

Performance dependent, students who wish to pursue a Master of Science degree upon completion of one of our Graduate Certificates can expect all 15 credits to transfer to the MS program if accepted into the program. Admission to one of our online certificates does not guarantee you admission into Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering Graduate School to pursue an advanced degree. Students who apply to the MS Program upon completion of the Certificate must submit GRE scores if required by the department.
