New round of funding to explore how nanoparticles deform under load
Nanoparticles are technologically useful but also known to be unstable and deform easily under load, losing their beneficial properties when they do.
Together with Collaborator Ashlie Martini at UC Merced, we’ve received funding from the Department of Energy’s office of Basic Energy Sciences to continue exploring how nanoparticles deform and how to make them stronger and more stable.
Our group does the experiments, compressing nanoparticles in a transmission electron microscope so we can see the atomic lattice as they deform. Prof. Martini’s group does the computer simulations, where we can follow each individual atom as the virtual particles deform.
