I am an anesthesiologist, biomedical engineer, and physician-scientist who predominantly uses human cognitive neuroscience methods to investigate phenomena relevant to the clinical practice of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. My long-standing involvement in pain functional neuroimaging research began in 2004 with the optimization work I did as my doctoral research. Using experimental pain as a cognitive experimental task, I collected physiologic data during functional MRI scanning and used these to correct the images for signal fluctuations unrelated to the neural response of interest. During my NRSA postdoctoral fellowship, I began the anesthetic neuroscience work that is ongoing. My current research continues to use functional MRI and complementary neuroscience research techniques to examine the interacting effects in the human brain when the systems for memory encoding, pain processing, and threat response are modulated by the diverse anesthetics propofol, dexmedetomidine, and fentanyl. This has been successfully funded by NIGMS. Through this work, I developed a strong and diverse network of mentors and other collaborators who have helped me to develop further expertise in MRI acquisition and analysis, cognitive neuroscience of pain and memory, and anesthetic pharmacology. I am deeply committed to training future researchers, particularly those at interface of engineering, neuroscience, and medicine. I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive laboratory environment where diverse trainees can reach their maximal potential, through a comprehensive partnership in career development.
