Faculty Lead: Dr. Minhee Yun, Dr. Inhee Lee, Dr. Jun Chen, and Dr. Susheng Tan
Outreach Type: PK–12
Each year, Dr. Minhee Yun leads the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) Nanotechnology Workshop at the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering (PINSE). This program introduces high school students to cutting-edge research in nanotechnology through a lecture, guided tour, and hands-on laboratory activities inside one of Pitt’s premier research facilities.
Students explore advanced nanofabrication, characterization tools, and real research environments, gaining early exposure to the interdisciplinary nature of nanoscale engineering.
The workshop has run annually since 2007, engaging 20–28 students from 10–15 school districts across Southwestern Pennsylvania. The 14th workshop was held on November 1, 2025, marking more than a decade of sustained outreach and mentoring.
Impact and Learning Outcomes
Participants develop:
- An introductory understanding of nanotechnology principles and applications
- Exposure to state-of-the-art equipment for nanoscale fabrication and measurement
- Hands-on experience through guided activities led by faculty and graduate students
- Insight into engineering research pathways and STEM career opportunities
- Engagement with Pitt’s scientific community through direct interaction with researchers
The program also provides leadership and mentoring opportunities for graduate students and ECE faculty, strengthening connections between research and K–12 STEM education.
Support
- Hosted in the PINSE facility, offering access to high-precision research tools
- Supported by PJAS regional partnerships and longstanding Pitt ECE outreach activities
- Operates as a no-cost educational experience for participating schools and students
