XProjects, where X can be anything, are 6-8 week real-world projects in which teams of 3 to 5 students design, prototype, and test a real-world device, product, or system for a client who may be a Pitt researcher or an outside company. XProjects are win-win for students and clients. Check out how to get involved whether you have a design/prototyping project to be done or if you are a student looking for a short-term team-based immersive project.
Fall 2024 Projects
Lyme Disease Test Kit
Build a housing for a novel test kit for Lyme Disease to assist Pitt researchers in gathering data through clinical trials. This project will involve a deep dive into human-centered design to develop a step-by-step system to incorporate the various steps of the novel Lyme Disease test. This will also incorporate an investigation into injection molded housing for components of the test kit.
Asphalt Extrusion Simulation Prototyping
Conduct an exploratory design project investigating ways to replicate asphalt extrusion in collaboration with an ongoing IDEA Project. The goal of this project is to explore a variety of ways to simulate volume-controlled deposition of asphalt via some extrusion nozzle. The team will conduct materials research to identify substrates that wjvf6G behave similarly to asphalt, as well as explore extrusion mechanisms for similar materials.
Makerspace Usage Tracking System
Build a functional prototype of a card reader to read Pitt Student ID cards to help develop a usage tracking system for the Pitt Makerspaces. This project will incorporate prototyping of the card reader device itself, microcontroller and electronics design, and some database development.
