Neonatal Epidural Catheter Ultrasound Trainer
The IDEA Lab collaborated with pediatric anesthesiologist, Dr. Mihaela Visoiu, from UPMC Children’s Hospital to develop an ultrasound-capable neonatal epidural catheter simulator. The Lab conducted extensive materials research and design to produce a lifelike trainer—both in appearance and tactile response—that provides realistic haptic and ultrasound feedback for safely practicing catheter placement in the epidural space without contacting the spinal cord. These simulators have been used at medical conferences to train anesthesiologists in advanced neonatal procedures.
