EDUCATION

Since 2012, the CMI Medical Product Engineering program has graduated 266 students, of whom 230 have earned the MS in Bioengineering—Medical Product Engineering degree, and 36 have earned the Certificate in Medical Product Innovation from the Department of Bioengineering.

EARLY STAGE RESEARCH

Since 2012, 361 proposals have been reviewed for CMI early-stage seed grants and 90 have received awards up to $25,000 for a total of over $1.6M invested. Hundreds of collaborations between engineers and clinicians have resulted. At least half of the projects have resulted in significant intellectual property. Ten projects are currently moving into commercialization phases funded by industry licensees, SBIR grants, and other resources from the investment community.

MISSION

The CMI mission is to foster collaborations among engineers, clinicians, students, industry and others interested in advancing the translation of innovative biomedical technologies toward commercial realization.

RESULTS

Roughly 25 percent of proposals receive awards for one year, and 15 new companies have been formed to commercialize the technologies. Over $22M in grants and private funding have been obtained by project teams that received early stage CMI grants.
