Abstract:

Triad microstructure is an important, but neglected, aspect of inter-firm network structure. We develop the constructs clustering and countering as potential drivers of triadic structure, and combine them with the recently developed p* network model to demonstrate the value and feasibility of triadic analysis. Exploratory analysis of network data from the global steel industry reveals firms' tendency to form transitive triads, with such triads demonstrating a greater tendency to exist among firms belonging to the same geographic or technology block.
