SSoE Procedures for Requesting Sabbatical Leave

Sabbatical leaves are awards available to tenured members of the faculty who submit convincing evidence of conducting scholarly or other appropriate endeavors on released time which will advance their own professional standing and, upon their return to the University, enrich their teaching and research. …  [T]he granting of a sabbatical leave depends on the unit's ability to maintain necessary teaching schedules, either by reallocation of work among other faculty or, in rare cases, with justification through temporary replacements.”

See the Faculty Handbook for complete details on faculty eligibility and obligations.

The Office of the Provost has indicated that it “will require significant justification to approve hiring (temporary or otherwise) that is required due to leaves.” (Email 8/25/25)

SSoE Faculty desiring to take leave must complete the SSoE Sabbatical Application.  After completing the application form, save it as a pdf file, and proceed to submit that file along with your current CV for processing via DocuSign.

Sabbatical requests are due in the Dean’s office by October 15 of the year preceding the intended leave period.  Accordingly, faculty should submit their application via DocuSign by October 1 to allow sufficient time for the Chair to review the request, ensure minimal disruption to the activities of the Department, especially the teaching mission, and transmit the request with their approval to the Dean’s office by the October 15 deadline.
