Why Medical Innovation?
Universities around the country are committing time and resources to translate clinical research and inventions into diagnostic and therapeutic products and services. Ultimately, the goal is to improve the quality and cost of health care. Government, industry, and academia are becoming more aligned to drive technological innovations from “bench to bedside”. The Center for Medical Innovation (CMI) was established by the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh to connect clinicians with engineers through a “go-to” organization that can accelerate innovation processes.
The CMI is a cross-functional organization that engages the collaborative efforts of the Swanson School of Engineering, the Schools of Health Sciences, The Katz Business School, The School of Law, and the Office of Technology Management to facilitate medical innovation processes. The CMI helps to accelerate and provide seed funding for early stage medical innovations to allow advancement toward clinical use and commercialization. CMI works closely with the Wallace Coulter Translational Research Partnership to meet this goal.
